Before you can even start riding a horse, you need to know how to mount it. Then you need to know how to go forward and steer it to the left and right. You also need to know how to stop it. It can take some time to become confident when riding a horse. The following are some of the tips that will help you to learn how to ride.
Mounting a horse
To mount a horse, start by standing on its left-hand side. Gather the reins in your left hand and rest it on the horse’s neck. Put your right hand on the saddle and your left foot in the stirrup. Use both hands to stand up in the left stirrup. You will now have the impetus to swing the right leg over the horse’s back. Put your foot in the right stirrup. You must have both feet in the stirrups to stay safe and balanced.
Jockeys who take part in major horse races like the Kentucky Derby or the Preakness Stakes need to stay secure in the saddle if they hope to win. It is easy to bet on major horse races in the U.S. like the Belmont Stakes or Breeders’ Cup by using a sports betting app.
Going forward
The first step to getting a horse to go forward is to sit tall and straight in the saddle. The horse can feel that you are confident and ready to go. Don’t subconsciously put pressure on the horse’s mouth by tugging the reins. It will move forward if you squeeze its sides with your lower legs. You can use leg pressure to make it move forward or go faster. Relax the pressure as soon as the horse goes forward. Otherwise, it may go faster and faster. When you watch jockeys riding in major races, you will see them urging their horses on using leg pressure.
Make a horse stop
To make a horse stop, you must rotate your hips back in the saddle and apply more weight to your seat and heels. This communicates to the horse that you want to slow down or stop. If your horse doesn’t stop, you can gently pull back on the reins. Create just enough tension between your hands and the horse’s mouth. If your horse doesn’t want to stop, you can use a one-rein stop. Reach your hand halfway down one reign, bring it out, and rest it on your hip. This will make the horse slow down and start going in a circle.
Steering a horse
One of the reasons to love horse riding is the ability to communicate with the horse. The horse can feel even the smallest movements when you are in the saddle. You can steer the horse in a direction simply by looking where you want to go. If you look down, you will communicate insecurity. If you want to go left, pull your left rein in that direction. Pull your right reign if you want to go right. You can also put pressure on the horse using your left calf if you want to go right or your right calf if you want to go left.
