Why is oral hygiene imperative today?

Oral hygiene is imperative today because poor oral hygiene can not only lead to a range of dental and health problems, it can lead to a non-Instagrammable click. Okay, let’s keep that aside for a while. Poor oral hygiene can lead to cavities, gum disease, bad breath, and tooth loss. In addition, research has shown that poor oral hygiene can contribute to a variety of other health problems, such as heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and respiratory infections. Good oral hygiene is also important for social and psychological reasons. Poor oral hygiene can cause bad breath and discolored teeth, which can be embarrassing and affect a person’s self-esteem. Regular dental check-ups and cleanings can help prevent these problems and ensure that any dental issues are caught and treated early.

Furthermore, with the prevalence of social media and online communication, a healthy and attractive smile has become increasingly important for personal and professional relationships. Therefore, maintaining good oral hygiene is essential not only for oral health but also for overall health, social confidence, and professional success. And since oral hygiene is essential, it can be done with essential oils.

Best Effective Essential Oils For Oral Hygiene

Frankincense oil: It is sometimes used in oral care products due to its health-related traits. Studies have suggested that it may help to reduce inflammation and remove harmful bacteria in the mouth. Frankincense Essential Oil by Gya Labs must be used only in small amounts and diluted properly before use. . These products have been tested and proven safe and effective for maintaining good oral hygiene.

Tea Tree oil: This is yet another essential oil that is used in oral care products because of its health-based properties. Tea Tree has been found to be effective against various bacteria and fungi that can cause oral infections such as gingivitis and oral thrush. Use with caution as undiluted tea tree oil can be irritating to the skin and mucous membranes, and ingestion of tea tree oil can be toxic.

Peppermint oil: Peppermint oil has a refreshing taste and smell and has been found to be effective against oral bacteria that cause bad breath and cavities. The aroma of peppermint might be found in your regular toothpaste and if you check the ingredient list, the chances of finding peppermint oil there is very high.

Clove oil: The oil from the Syzygium aromaticum has analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties that can help to soothe toothaches and reduce inflammation in the gums. This is also an aroma used in store bought toothpastes.

Cinnamon oil: Cinnamon oil has been found to have antimicrobial properties that can help to fight oral bacteria and reduce bad breath. It has a sweet and pleasant aroma, one that you can sniff in your everyday toothpaste or mouthwash.

Eucalyptus oil: We have included peppermint oil in this list so it is only fair that we do not miss out on eucalyptus oil. This oil has been found to have antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties that can help to fight oral infections and reduce inflammation in the gums.

Myrrh oil: The oil from the myrrh plant is not a popular choice when it comes to oral care but it is effective nonetheless. It has a long history of use in traditional medicine for its health-based properties. It has been found to have potential for treating oral infections and promoting oral health.

Oregano oil: This oil too is not a popular choice when it comes to oral care, but is another essential oil that has been found to have antimicrobial properties and potential benefits for oral health. It has been studied for its ability to inhibit the growth of oral bacteria and reduce inflammation in the gums.

How to Use Essential Oils For Oral Care

Gum massage: Massaging diluted essential oil directly onto the gums can help to reduce inflammation and promote oral health. Dilute the essential oil with a carrier oil (such as olive oil) or even a tinge of toothpaste before use.

Oil pulling: Oil pulling involves swishing a tablespoon of oil in the mouth for 15-20 minutes to help remove bacteria and promote oral health. Adding a drop of essential oil to the oil can help to enhance its healthy properties.

Toothpaste: And of course, you can add a few drops of the oil directly to the toothpaste. Adding a drop or two of essential oil to your toothpaste can help freshen the breath and fight oral bacteria. As mentioned before, peppermint oil, cinnamon oil, and clove oil are commonly used in natural toothpaste formulations.

Mouthwash: Adding a few drops of essential oil to a homemade or store-bought mouthwash can help freshen up one’s breath. Tea tree oil, peppermint oil, and cinnamon oil are commonly used in natural mouthwash formulations.

Safety to Follow while Using Essential Oils for Oral Hygiene

    •         Dilute the essential oil: Essential oils are highly concentrated and should always be diluted with a carrier oil (such as sweet almond oil or olive oil) before use. A safe dilution ratio for oral use is generally 1-2 drops of essential oil per tablespoon of carrier oil.
    •         Never swallow EOs: Essential oils should not be swallowed, as they can be toxic when ingested in large quantities. Spit out any oil or mouthwash after use.
    •         Do not use it on children: Some essential oils can be unsafe for use on children, especially those under 6 years old. Always consult a healthcare professional before using essential oils on children.
    •         Check for allergies beforehand: Before using any new essential oil, perform a patch test to check for allergies or sensitivities. Apply a small amount of diluted oil to the inside of your elbow and wait 24 hours to see if any reaction occurs.
    •         Speak with a dentist: If you have any concerns about using essential oils for oral health, or if you are experiencing any oral health problems, speak with a dental professional before using any new products or alternative therapies.
