    How To Maintain Braided Hairstyles

    RockyBy RockyMay 2, 2023Updated:May 2, 2023No Comments4 Mins Read

Braided hairstyles are a popular and practical way to protect your natural hair while adding variety to your look. Whether you’re rocking box braids, cornrows, twists, or any other braided style, proper maintenance is essential to keeping your hair healthy and your braids looking fresh for as long as possible.

Braid hairstyles have been a popular trend for centuries and are loved for their versatility and low maintenance. However, maintaining braids requires proper care and attention to look fresh and healthy. Below are some helpful tips and tricks to help you maintain your braided hairstyles and keep them looking great for as long as possible.

    • Keep Your Braids Moisturized

One of the most important things you can do to maintain your braids is to moisturize them. Braids can dry your hair and scalp, so it’s important to ensure they stay hydrated.

A lightweight oil or serum is a great way to add moisture and prevent frizz. Apply the oil or serum to your braids and scalp every few days or as needed. You can also use a spray bottle filled with water and a leave-in conditioner to keep your scalp and braids moisturized throughout the day.

Another way to moisturize your braids is to use a deep conditioning treatment. This can help restore moisture to your hair and scalp, leaving your braids shiny and healthy. You can use a store-bought deep conditioner or make your own at home using natural ingredients like avocado, honey, and coconut oil.

    • Protect Your Braids At Night

When you sleep, your hair can become tangled and frizzy, which can cause breakage and damage. To protect your braids while you sleep, wrap them in a satin scarf or bonnet. This will help keep your braids smooth and prevent them from snagging on your pillowcase.

If you prefer not to wear a scarf or bonnet, try sleeping on a satin pillowcase. This will help to reduce friction and prevent your braids from getting tangled.

    • Don’t Overwash Your Braids

Washing your braids too often can cause them to unravel and lose shape. Instead, wash your braids every two to three weeks or as needed. When you do wash your braids, be gentle and avoid rubbing or tugging on them. Use a gentle shampoo and focus on your scalp rather than your braids.

After washing your braids, make sure to rinse out all of the shampoo and conditioner thoroughly. Leaving any product in your hair can cause buildup, itching, and flaking.

Make sure to keep your scalp clean by washing it regularly. You can use a gentle shampoo or co-wash to cleanse your scalp without stripping it of its natural oils.

    • Protect Your Hairline

Braided hairstyles can be particularly damaging to your hairline, so taking extra care is important. Ensure your braids aren’t too tight around your hairline, which can cause breakage and hair loss. You can also use a hair growth oil or serum to promote healthy hair growth in this area.

    • Take Breaks Between Braiding

While braids are a protective style, it’s important to take breaks between braiding to allow your hair and scalp to rest. Constantly braiding your hair can cause tension and damage your hairline, leading to hair loss.

When you take a break from braiding, keep your hair and scalp moisturized and clean. This will help to promote healthy hair growth and prevent breakage and damage.

    • Be Gentle When Removing Your Braids

When it’s time to remove your braids, be gentle to avoid causing damage to your hair and scalp. Use sharp scissors to cut the extensions off at the base, then unravel the braids carefully. You can use a hair oil or conditioner to help loosen the braids and make them easier to remove.

    • Don’t Keep Your Braids In For Too Long

While braids can be a great protective style, it’s important not to keep them in for too long. Leaving your braids in too long can cause tension and damage your hair and scalp, leading to hair loss.

As a general rule, aim to keep your braids in for no more than six to eight weeks. This will allow your hair and scalp to rest and recover before you braid again.
