India’s rich cuisine is significantly influenced by the diverse local traditions and cultures of the country. These cuisines have had a major impact on the dishes and snacks in general. East and South India are famed for their rice-based snacks. On the other hand, North India is famous for its wheat-centric diets.

The key crops that grow in different parts of the nation impact the wide array of cuisines. As such, India’s menus have become highly diverse as every region has its assortment of delicious cuisines. Indian homemade food and delicious dishes are always aimed at satisfying the palates of people across the world.

With an immense variety in dishes and cuisines, India also features a wide array of lip-smacking snacks that are popular both locally as well as internationally. Here are some for you to try out:

    1. Kara Sev

It is a famous teatime crunchy snack prepared out of Besan (chickpea flour), spices, and rice flour. Water is added to thicken the dough. The Sev is passed through a specialized vessel featuring large holes of a ladle into piping hot oil. In the oil, the Sev is fried until crispy and puffed. There are several variations of Kara Sev across India.

    2. Murukku

Murrukus are a highly popular snack especially in South India. The name of the snack is derived from a Tamil term implying ‘twisted.’ It is depicted through the spiral shape of the dish. The snack is typically prepared out of the combination of Urad Dal flour and rice flour. The flour combination is mixed with chili powder, salt, sesame seeds, and asafetida.

Water is eventually to prepare a toughened dough. It is then shaped spirally with the help of hands. Otherwise, it can also be extruded with the help of a specialized Murukku mold. Eventually, the seasoned flour-mixed spirals are fried in piping hot oil.

    3. Khakra

It is yet another crispy, delicious flatbread that has its origins in the state of Gujarat. The famous teatime snack is prepared with the mixture of mat bean, what flour, and oil. Immensely popular as a healthy Indian snack, it is consumed as a famous morning breakfast. Therefore, to savor the best of its taste, you can have the famous delicacy with an assortment of delicious Chutneys.

Khakra also serves as a delicious, sweet snack by sprinkling the dish with sugar and ghee.

    4. Papadum

It is a thin, crispy cracker dish prepared out of bread. The primary ingredients of this snack item are chickpea flour, rice, gram, and lentils. It can be consumed on its own, with other meals like curries, or with pickles.

Along with hot coffee or tea, Papadum can be consumed with curd or delicious chutneys. With its overall popularity, there are some variations to the dish. For instance, you can try out the scrumptious rice Papadum. It is prepared by boiling rice in water and drying thin sheets in the sun. You can also have the delicious Masala Papadum (spiced with a condiment of chili, pepper, cumin, and garlic) and Jackfruit Papadum (prepared with chickpea flour and jackfruit).

    5. Chikki

Chikki is a popular Indian sweet snack. It primarily consists of peanuts, almonds, jaggery, or sugar. In addition to the most common variant of Peanut Chikki, there are several other interesting variations for you to try out. Roasted or puffed Bengal gram, puffed rice, sesame, Khobar (desiccated coconut), beaten rice, pistachios, cashews, and other nuts are some of the famous ingredients used in different variants of Chikki.

    6. Banana Chips or Upperi

The origins of Upperi or Banana Chips date back to the state of Kerala. They are either sprinkled with honey or sugar to attain a sweet flavor. In other cases, they are fried in hot oil and tempered with delicious spices for a spicy or salty flavor.

Fried banana chips are mostly prepared out of under-ripe banana slices that are deep-fried in coconut or sunflower oil. In Kerala, local fried plantain chips are known as Upperi. This unique style of preparing the chips makes use of both unripe and ripe plantains.

    7. Madras Mixture

A classic serving of Madras Mixture is a divine combination of several mouth-watering delicacies. Often featuring ingredients like roasted peanuts, ompodi, boondi, roasted chana dal, flattened rice flakes, cashews, and almonds, the divine snack of Madras Mixture is also known as Micchar. While it follows a tradition of being prepared during Diwali, still it is a popular snack that is enjoyed across all seasons of the year. You can have it best with a cup of steaming tea or coffee.
